Wilson Building

People claim all the time that there's nothing going on development-wise here, and they blame the fact that there's a slow-down on a proposed mega-mall expansion.

But Below 40 has put together a group called Adapt CNY, which will buy and develop the Wilson Building, which stands in the 300 block of South Salina Street. The plan: 33 apartments and 7500 square feet of retail space.

Not only does that not sound like "no development," it sounds like there are young professionals sticking around working toward positive change in Syracuse. Gasp.

UPDATE: Someone has tipped us off to the existence of a new web site designed to help save the Wilson Building.
Comments:
But I wonder, who in Syracuse can afford $1100 apartments? I appreciate their efforts, but I have to admit my first reaction to this news was "And the gentrification process begins..."

To a large extent, I'd have to agree -- notwithstanding the fact that there are a couple dozen $2,000-plus apartments in the works downtown. And I think if there's little demand for $1100 apartments downtown, they'll be able to lower the price, even if it means they need to do longer-term leases to guarantee flow.

But at the same time, those $700 apartments that have been in Hanover Square have no problem going, and if the Wilson Building apartments can be split between two or three people, well, they should have no problem going at all.

Now let's just get I-81 out of the way, and it'll be easier to get all the SU kids living downtown in expensive apartments. And once we get 'em downtown, we can probably convince them to stay after they graduate!
